Understanding Solar Azimuth
Azimuth is the compass direction that your solar panels face, measured clockwise from true North. In the Northern hemisphere, the sun is always in the southern part of the sky, so panels should face South (180°). In the Southern hemisphere, panels should face North (0°).
Getting the azimuth wrong by 45° can reduce your panel's yearly output by up to 25%. A 90° error — facing East instead of South, for example — can cut production by nearly half.
Azimuth by Hemisphere
Northern Hemisphere
Face panels true South (180°). For locations above 25°N, a slight adjustment of ±15° can capture more morning or afternoon sun.
Southern Hemisphere
Face panels true North (0°). The same ±15° rule applies for optimizing morning vs. afternoon production.
